The residents of Edina enjoy an exceptionally high quality of life and
value a love of culture and the arts. To this end, the Edina Public Art
Committee, comprised of residents and Edina Community Foundation and Art
Center representatives, was convened to enhance the beauty of Edina's public
spaces with two- and three-dimensional art.
This public art program began in City Hall with rotating exhibits
of local artists' paintings throughout departments. Pick up an "Edina City Hall
Art Guide" (available in the lobby) for a quick overview of the current works on
display. In addition, for permanent display, the ceramic planters were created exclusively
for City Hall by Art Center faculty member Adama Sow, our talented Artist in Residence
from Senegal. An art glass window designed by Michael Pilla was installed in City Hall in late 2006
and dedicated in April 2007.
Other projects include:
- Grandview Square Park with sculptures rotating on loan annually.
- "Otter" by Jeffrey Birch installed in Edinborough Park as a gift of
Betty and Ron Hemstad.
- Sport murals designed by Robert Ellison installed in 2008 in the
Edina Community Center and South View Middle School City gyms.
- "Pinecone" to be installed in Centennial Lakes Park maze in 2008 as
a gift of John and Jean Hedberg.
- Nine plazas with sculptures/art in the Edina Promenade, pathways
linking the Galleria, Centennial Lakes and York Avenue. Promenade
construction of pathways was completed in November 2008. A
ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in the spring of 2009.
The Public Art Committee has issued a Call for Sculptors for a sculpture
loan program for Grandview Square Park and the Edina Promenade in 2009.
Entries are due March 15, 2009.
